Bratwurst
One object in my life that reminds me of my family’s migration story is Bratwursts. My mom is from Germany, which makes me 50 percent German. Since I’ve never been to Germany, the only thing I have to help me understand what it’s like there is the stories that my she tells me and the food that she introduces me to. One food she introduced me to was bratwursts. Bratwursts were created in Germany but have since become a popular food worldwide. During holidays such as Christmas and Easter, My entire family gathers together at my grandparents house and we have a dinner with a variety of foods, including bratwursts. When I asked my mom why she enjoys bratwursts, she said: “not only are they a really good food, but they also remind me of my life back in Germany.” She said that she often misses it, but the German foods in the United States help her remember her past. Although I’m not from Germany, when I eat bratwursts, it reminds me of my family and the good times when we gather. I'm also able to imagine what life was like for my relatives. That is why bratwursts are one of my favorite foods, no matter the occasion.
