Bracelet
In the summer of 2018, I received a bracelet while visiting Ghana that continues to hold deep meaning for me. The bracelet is handmade with colorful beads and carries a gold plate engraved with my name, “Sara.” At first, I didn’t even enjoy being in Ghana I wanted to go home as soon as I got there. But as time went on, my experience completely changed. I made new friends, reconnected with family members I hadn’t seen in decades, tried new foods, and felt a sense of freedom and peace that I had never experienced before. By the last day, I didn’t even want to leave. That is why this bracelet means so much to me: it represents not just Ghana’s artistry and culture, but also my own journey of embracing where I was and finding joy in it. Wearing it reminds me of my roots, the memories I created there, and how cultural identity is something we carry with us no matter where we go. Everyday I miss Ghana and I want to go back so bad!
