Blue hijab
The artifact I chose is a blue hijab. I was given this blue hijab by one of my close friends, Raima. She gave it to me for my 17th birthday. However I barely ever use the hijab myself, but my mom and other sister have grown fond of it. My mom wears that hijab everyday as she loves the material. I don’t know the exact type of material but the hijab doesn't easily slip off your head. So whenever she has to run errands my mom always picks the blue hijab to wear. My mom liked the hijab so much to the point she asked me to ask Raima where she bought the hijab from. This artifact is important to me because it represents my religion which is islam. In islam women are encouraged to wear a hijab however it's not forced upon and it shows your connection to Allah. This also connects to my friend Raima because we share the same values about our religion islam. While this also connects to immigration because I brought a piece of my religion from Pakistan to America when my family was here in 2019. This connects to my identity as a hijabi who lives in NYC because I see other hijabi New Yorkers and it makes me feel proud to represent my faith and seeing other muslim women do the same. As a community in NYC, there are so many ways to make everyone feel comfortable and respected by doing acts of helping each other out whether that's emotionally or physically and supporting one another as we all live in a shared city.
