Bangles

After marrying, my parents immigrated to the States in the late 80s. At the time my mother was completing medical school, and leaving behind her childhood home and family, didn't leave her with much room in her suitcase for personal belongings. However, her churis, or bangle set, were non-negotiable. Traditionally, bangles are worn with a sari as an accessory to dress anything up. To my mother, the jingling sound of the bangles against her wrists carried a sense of happiness and pride in both her femininity and culture. Her bangles were a way for her to express herself, and this tradition was carried over after she immigrated. Her bangle collection was curated over the years with the help of loved ones, friends, and family. Adjusting to America, my mom never wanted to abandon this part of her upbringing, and before any event she would put on her bangles, and share the culture and significance to anyone who would listen. Growing up, my mother included my sisters and I in this tradition. Her vast collection seemed to have the right size and color for every occasion. Each time my mother would meticulously adorn us in bangles, my sisters and I felt the same sense of pride in our heritage. My mothers bangles have watched me through every stage in my life, forging a place in not just my heart, but around my wrists as well. I hope to add to the collection and share it with the next generation of women in our family.
