Baby Bib
In 1979, I immigrated to the United States after being adopted from an orphanage in Colombia. I was only 4 months old when I took my first plane ride and was given this bib to wear by the flight attendants. The AV on the bib is the symbol of the airline, Avianca. The words, “Feliz Viaje” translate to Happy Journey. Looking at it reminds me of how fortunate I was to grow up in the US and not in Colombia where orphans had few opportunities to succeed. I grew up Irish-American in New Jersey and never learned Spanish nor much about my Colombian culture. But being married to a Spanish/History teacher has afforded me the opportunity to travel to my native country with my own personal translator to explore my Colombian roots.
