Both my mother and father immigrated to America in the late 1900s, in hopes of forging a better life for themselves, and achieving "the American Dream". My father, who came to America years before my mother did, came all alone. He was born in Sanandaj, but later moved to Tehran, the capital city of Iran. His family consisted of his two parents, one older sister, one younger sister, and him. Leaving everything, and everyone, he knew behind, at the age of about 20, my father was forced to create a new life all on his own, in an unknown country. He immigrated to New York City for numerous reasons: many Iranian immigrants like himself were coming here, there was a high demand for workers, etc. Upon arrival he immediately searched for a job, and soon found one working in a clothing boutique in Midtown. Years after my father had immigrated to America, his family soon followed, as were many others like themselves. They arrived on Long Island, New York, and while they did not live together, my father often visited them. In their immigration to America, my father's mother, brought several, beautiful hand-crafted Persian items, this tea set, being one of which. She immediately gifted this set to my father, to put in his apartment, a reminder of where they had come from, and what their old life used to be. Today, my father has moved on to Long Island, where he has started his family with us, and has brought along with him this tea set, presenting it in a glass covered shelf closet in our living room, a constant reminder of where he had came from.
