This story centers on my great aunt, Rosa Lee Hanton, the oldest living relative in our family until her passing on March 14, 2022. Born on May 12, 1923, in Rock Hill, South Carolina, Rosa exemplified strength and resilience. At a young age, she relocated to Washington, D.C., where she dedicated herself to caring for others. Her remarkable career as a baker at Mrs. K's Toll House Restaurant lasted until her retirement in 1985.
Rosa was a deeply committed Christian and an active member of Highway Christian Church, affectionately known as "Sister Hanton" or "Mother Hanton." Her hospitality was unmatched; she had a gift for bringing people together through her cooking. Every Monday and holiday, family and friends gathered at her home for delicious meals filled with love.
The three photos I have of Rosa represent not only her life but also the rich family history from which I come. They evoke cherished memories of family gatherings, shared stories, and the warmth of her home. My great aunt’s legacy of love and community inspires me, reminding me of the importance of family, heritage, and compassion. Through her story, I feel a deep connection to our family's roots, and I honor her memory by sharing this piece of our story with others.
