The novel Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix means a lot to me because it was one of the first books that I enjoyed reading while I was in middle school. Reading the book showed me that reading could be suspenseful, relatable, and enjoyable. Up until 8th grade, I had only read academic textbooks and articles which I found uninteresting. I remember in 8th grade reading “Among the Hidden” and I was instantly hooked because of how relatable the protagonist was: Luke Gardner had been hidden inside his parent's farm ever since he was born & was safe until he met his neighbor's third child: Jen. The book series reminds me of how I felt when I first moved to the U.S. as an immigrant from the Dominican Republic. I felt out of place, like an outsider, and for the first few months, I was confined to my parent's home.
