- My grandma, alongside her son, husband and a few siblings and cousins all left Jamaica together to live in the United States. On April 14th, we all gather together and eat ackee and saltfish with fried dumplings on the side. We do this because that is the same day i n 2001 that they all left Jamaica in search of the American dream. Ackee and Saltfish is known to be the national dish of Jamaica. It is important for us to celebrate with this dish because that day symbolizes the departing from their home for a new life; however, they are reminded that Jamaica is still their home through eating the national dish of Jamaica.
