My culture is African American/Soulaan culture. Soulaan is a term used for AA with roots in the southern part of the USA to honor our cultural and historical connections. Many people believe we don't have a culture because we don't know our roots but in reality we do and it's very popular in modern-day society. Our influences to trends and fashion like streetwear, baggy clothes, hoops, long nails, edges etc. We created many genres of music like Jazz, Blues, RnB. Hip-Hop, Rap, and even Rock. Cookouts are a very popular and notable thing within our community that we created. My own family participates in this as well when there is an event or a get together. Many people aren't aware of this but AAs have a language that's been buried called "Tutnese/Tut” that enslaved African Americans used to communicate. A lot of us have sub culture groups of people in the south, Like the Gullah Geechee or Louisiana Creole etc. As a southern born person food is also ingrained in our culture like soul food which consists of collard greens, mac and cheese, ox tails, cornbread etc. Moving to New York in 2023 was a big change in everything and made me more well diverse in new cultures that I didn't know about before. Like food of different Caribbean cultures is all new to me. It also helped me learn to get around by myself, and become more independent as a teenager as I was used to being driven everywhere in Georgia. So moving to New York changed me in positive ways.
