A Somali Uunsi
Uunsi is a traditional Somali incense made from natural aromatic herbs. It’s usually made from frankincense, spices, and oils. While lighting it I listened to the sound of the charcoal crackling like little fireworks. To assemble you would have to place a small piece of aluminum foil, then go in with a lit charcoal, then once you place the aromatic materials the smoke instantly starts and the smell wraps around you like a blanket.
The uunsi reminded me of Somalia, a place I only knew through pictures and stories. Growing up in a Somali household you often see your mom lighting an uunsi just after cleaning or when guests are coming over. The smoke from it only lasts a while but the smell it leaves after is astounding. “Close the windows” my mom would say “ don’t let the smell escape”.
Growing up in Minnesota I was always grateful to whatever brought me closer to my culture. The uunsi was a small part of my household but It made a huge difference. I remember coming home from school and being welcomed by the rich amber smell. Over the years that we’ve moved the uunsi followed as well. To other people an uunsi might be a regular everyday incense but to me it's the scent of home.
