1970 Craftsman Drill Press
My families 1970 Sears Craftsman Drill press important to not only but also is a significant part of history. Now when you first look at this drill press it is simple to get the hold of and use. With its large, gray appearance and simplistic design of large switches on the top, to turn the light and drill on and off, and a big handle on the side, to operate the pressing motion of the drill press.
Our specific drill press was passed down from my great grandfather, who was a wood worker; to my grandfather, who made a lot of things with the drill press and also woodworked in his free time; to my mother, who didn’t use it all the time but it meant something to her; and now to me, which I woodwork in my free time and use it sometimes when I work on my vehicles. This drill press means a lot to me because it makes me feel connected to my family members who I didn’t get to meet but I know I’m using the same tool they did to do the same things, therefore carrying on their memory and history of woodworking.
Now it is important to Americas history because it was one of the first major tools to be part of Americas post-war DIY culture. Also, it was the peak of sears catalogue, being a machine that was known for its durability and quality, carrying on the reminder of sears former dominance and eventual sale of the Craftsman company. It serves as a little reminder to all of us that they just do not make them as they used to.
