Silver Dance Necklace

The artifact I chose is a silver necklace passed down from my great-grandma to my grandma to me. The necklace features a dancer on it. Dancing is very important to me and my family (on my dad’s side).
My great-grandma was a professional dancer. She did various styles but mainly focused on ballroom dancing and tap. She opened her own dance studio in 1946 in Spartanburg, South Carolina which is now taken over by one of her daughters, who is one of my great aunts. The studio is currently run by my great aunt and her two daughters, who are my 2nd cousins, and other faculty. The studio is the longest-established dance studio in Spartanburg.
My grandma owns a dance studio in Atlanta, Georgia that has been open for over 50 years. The studio is self-run and is in her house. My grandma has done all styles but now only teaches tap and jazz at her studio.
I have been dancing for as long as I can remember focusing on all styles. Dance is important to my family's culture as it is something that we all do, specifically the girls in my family. While we all don’t have to take dancing seriously the ones who do, which is most of us, not only do it because we love it but it also feels good knowing that we get to carry my great-grandma’s legacy with us.
Even though I don’t wear the necklace often it means a lot to me. It’s a reminder of my and my family’s passion for dance and the generations of women who inspire me.
