My Hero, Your Hero My great grandpa served in 2 wars, he was a tailgunner in WW11 and in the Korean war, he fixed aircraft and fighter jets. The item I have chosen is my great grandfathers flag that was presented at his funeral 56 years later in 2009 after his last war that he fought in 1953 (the end of the Korean War). Inside there is the 21 bullets that were fired during his funeral to honor him. He flew 51 combat missions and flew B17 bombers which were the backbone of daylight strategic bombing campaigns against industrial sites in Nazi, Germany.
He was my great grandpa and he passed down his bravery and patriotism from generation to generation through our family. It connects to my family because it is a reward of bravery and honor and it has always been up on a high display shelf above the fireplace to honor what he did for not only my family, but, for our country. When my great grandpa was flying in a plane during WW11, he was 22 years old in an airplane that was flying 50,000 feet and he still volunteered to do so. This flag not only shows his story about how he fought in the wars, not only how he was brave, but shows how every American who fought in these wars were full of bravery and shows what a true American is supposed to be. He and other Americans fought hard to continue to have the United States thrive and be a nation full of freedom, pride, and most of all bravery.
The flag that I chose shows that Americans such as my Great Grandfather are truly one of the bravest people and show what it means to really be American.
