Wooden Cross
My object is a wooden cross that my grandfather, Grand-Dad, carved for me. The cross was hand-carved in my grandfather's shop at his house. He spends hours in his shop carving different types of sculptures for those that he knows and loves. The cross reminds me of the sacrifice He made. Along with Jesus's crucifixion, it also reminds me of how courageous my Grand-Dad is. Wood carving dates all the way back to prehistoric times. Woodcarving was used for religious purposes, such as creating crosses, which originated in the Middle Ages. Over the centuries, the art form became more popular; artists began using it more, even though it wasn't their first choice. There was an uprising in wood carvings for home decor in the 1800s. Although my grandfather has not been carving wood his whole life, he keeps the art alive with his newfound hobby. It is common for older people to take up hobbies as they age, often due to retirement and other life changes. He made a cross for my sister and me as a gift to help us fight our spiritual battles. My mom said, "I can guarantee you, he's probably praying for that person as he's carving these individual items." The cross reminds me I can get through anything with the right weapon. The cross helps me feel more rooted in my faith and connected to God. I know that his wood carvings are more than just decorations; they touch the hearts of countless people.
