Wooden Cross

Relationship: Child of im/migrant
Group:

My family migrated from Mexico to the U.S because in Mexico they didn't have enough job opportunities in order to support the large family.  Most of my family members migrated from Michoacan, Mexico to Phoenix, Arizona and then came to Chicago, Illinois. My family’s  American story began in 1993 when my oldest uncle crossed the border to the U.S to work and help his parents(my grandparents). Then, in 2001 my mom and other siblings crossed the border. My aunt is most representative of  my culture because she celebrates every holiday like they used to celebrate in Mexico. My object is a cross made of wood that my grandmother bought in Mexico and had it in her house for a few years and then she gave it to me because she said that the cross will protect my family and home in the U.S. My grandmother gave it to me when I first went to Mexico. My grandmother used the cross for prayer during holidays or family gatherings. Now, we use the cross during holidays and pray with it because it reminds my family of my grandmother and our celebrations in Mexico. The cross is important to me because my grandmother gave it to me before she passed away and also it is a big part of our religious faith.
