Ethyle Kauffman as a young woman.

My Grandmother, Ethyle Kauffman immigrated to the United States in 1942 when she was about 14 years old. She originally lived in Germany and as a young girl and she was forced to flee to America with her parents and siblings during the WWII genocide of the European Jews. Over 6 million Jews died in the Holocaust and more than one million of those whose lives taken were children. Ethyle had 5 siblings,  4 sisters, and 1 brother. She left behind close friends and started a new life in Providence, Rhode Island. She then married Herbert R. Ludwig and had 2 sons and 4 daughters. Her youngest son is my Father. One of his fondest childhood memories was reading and learning about the Torah in Hebrew with his mother. As Ethyle emigrated from Germany she was limited on what she should bring. Beholden, she held on to her beliefs, religion, and traditions and taught them to her children which were then passed down to me.  Ethyle Ludwig passed away on January 15, 2015, at the age of 87 years old, but left behind a legacy and new opportunities for her children and lineage.
