The Chocolate Turkey
One night in 1999, my parents were walking down Second Avenue in the Upper East Side, which was near where they lived at the time. They walked by a candy store and in the window they saw a turkey made out of chocolate. They thought it was funny and decided to buy one before the next Thanksgiving to smash with kitchen utensils and eat. 3 years later in 2002, after 2 chocolate turkeys had been smashed, my fake Uncle Ryan wrote a turkey smashing song that he would play on his guitar and everyone would sing along. He played the song every year he came before he stopped coming to our thanksgiving parties in 2009. I was born in 2006, and we have smashed and ate chocolate turkeys every thanksgiving since I was born. The chocolate turkey is important to me because it is a very uncommon tradition that I have continued through all these years. The turkey also tastes very good. In addition, it represents the identity of our family. We value humor and enjoyment. We also never do common traditions that we do not enjoy or value just because they are common.
