The 128 Year Old Ring
When Daniel Fraad boarded a ship in 1890 out of Latvia, & set sail for Castle Garden in the US, he took little more than what was on his back. He was 21 yrs old & his traveling companion was his wife, Rosa, who was 16. Before boarding, Rosa took the wedding ring Daniel had given her & she sewed it into a dress. It stayed stowed for over 4000 miles, until they arrived safely in NY. Rosa could never have imagined that over 100 yrs later, that same ring would rest on the hand of a young woman who will marry another woman in 2019. 6 yrs after arriving, Rosa would sadly pass away during childbirth. 3 yrs later, Daniel would marry a Polish immigrant named Therese Auerbach & (perhaps with some ounce of family judgement) he would give her Rosa's ring. My great-great grandparents would have 3 sons, the youngest being my great-grandfather, Daniel Fraad, Jr. (Junior). They moved to Brooklyn, NY where Junior would meet, by way of proximity & the Jewish community, Rita Rich. Before Junior was set to leave for college, he could not risk Rita finding someone else, & they secretly wed. Their parents would force a proper wedding when Rita was legally of age - with the very ring that Rosa had once travelled the ocean with. Junior & Rita would be the 1st generation to be born & thrive in the US. The ring would be passed on again, to their grandson, Daniel & Teddie (my parents). This yr they passed the ring to their daughter's partner so that she could propose to my sister using the same ring that came to this country with our family some 128 yrs ago.
