Telling Me Yes, Telling Me No

My great-grandfather, Frank Phillip Barbaro immigrated to New York from Plati, Italy as a teenager. He had a devout love for music, tracing back to his time in the Italian Army Band. He worked on the railroads in New York, saving money to move his family to Hollywood, with big dreams of composing. He opened a shoeshine shop to make ends meet, writing music and playing for his family every night after dinner. His singular composing credit (despite composing for many crooners in the 50’s) was on the Peggy Lee song, “Telling Me Yes, Telling Me No”. My grandma would always play this song when I was little as a lullaby sometimes singing it herself to me, and every time I hear it I think of my family.
