Oaxacan Tamales

Tamales

The Food item that I chose is tamales. You need different kinds of ingredients to make this. You will need flour made for tamales, salt, chicken, chicken soup, lard, water, and homemade chili sauce.   The dough is made out of corn kernels ground up finely and we add water, salt, lard, and chicken stock, and some homemade chili sauce. We mix it all together and then we get dried corn leaves and a little spoonful of dough and we spread it halfway on the leaf. It doesn't have to be spread thin. We get some chicken meat or beef and we put some on the dough and we get some chili sauce that my mom makes and put a little on top. After that, we fold it and let it cook for about 2 hours or until it doesn't stick to the leaf anymore. This food originated in Mesoamerica. Different parts of Mexico make it differently but my parents are from Oaxaca San Marcos Arteaga so they make them a little different. My mom brought these recipes from her parents. My parents taught me how to make tamales at an early age. We celebrate this during Christmas or a birthday. It connects to my family because every time my family makes tamales all of our family reunites together and eats together. This is important to me because soon I'll have to teach my kids about our cultural food.
