 Tallis
My family identifies with the Jewish religion. For my Bar Mitzvah I wore a Tallis, which is a garment worn as a prayer shawl by religious Jews and Samaritans. The Tallis I wore for my Bar Mitzvah was the Tallis my great-great grandpa wore. My great great grandpa was born in Poland which was where he bought the Tallis and wore it for the first time. The Tallis was purchased in the 1890’s.
My great-great grandpa immigrated to the United States of America to seek a better life, because of religious persecution at the time in Poland. When he immigrated to America he brought the Tallis with him. When his son, my great-grandpa’s Bar Mitzvah came along, he wore the Tallis his father wore. My great Grandpa then passed it down to my Grandpa who wore it for his Bar Mitzvah, and my uncle (my grandpa’ son) used it for his Bar Mitzvah, as well. Another way the Tallis has been passed down in my family was when my parents used it at their wedding,
Last November it was my turn to carry on the tradition of wearing my family's Tallis. I was in quarantine for my Bar Mitzvah and did not celebrate with my extended family. It was nice to feel connected to my extended family and feel my ancestors looking down on me. This also connects me and shows my Jewish religion.
