Soup Joumou
If you are Haitian, you should know that it is a tradition for all Haitians to eat soup joumou on January 1st, on our Independence Day. Many of us do it because it is a tradition that came from the people that we grew up with, but we never know the real story of the soup joumou. In summary, what we called soup joumou today was made by us Haitians when we were slaves of the French people. When we gained our Independence from them to show our pride, on January 1st we decided to eat the only food we were deprived to eat which was soup joumou. Joumou is what we called in English pumpkin, then we mixed it up with some vegetables and spices. If you are not vegan, you can also add meat. Every year, my mom is the one who cooks for our family. In the future, I think I'll be the one who cook for my family because I want this tradition to keep going because it's very important for all Haitians. In some sort, it reminds us that we have our freedom and that we are no longer slaves.
