It is made from caña flecha (arrow cane), a tall grass that grows on the Caribbean coast. Artisans transform pieces of cane into black and white strips and braid them to create different geometric patterns.

That hat is special for my culture because it represents the work of the farmers as salves for a long time in the past in Colombia who mainly worked harvesting sugar cane, banana and cassava in the Caribbean. As I am out of my country I feel interested in this hat and its history. In my country it helps farmers with the high temperatures. During the workday this hat helps farmers with the heat. Those hats are passed from generation to generation. I remember my grandfather. He had a big collection of hats made by different people.
