I am 6th generation Slovak on my fathers side, I grew up involved in festivals where we would sing and dance to traditional Eastern European music. During these festivals I wear a kroj ( Czech and Slovak word for traditional folk costumes, rich works of art worn for celebrations, indicating village, marital status, and heritage through intricate embroidery, lace, ribbons, and specific regional designs ) that represents the part of Slovakia that my family came from ( Zemplín region). There are many different types of kroje, for example, a kroj for when you go to work, or a party kroj like the one I am wearing in the picture. Wearing my kroj and being in festivals is important to me because it connects me to my culture, also helping me connect more with my ancestors.
