Sgian - Dubh
The artifact that has been in my family is called a Sgian-dubh (or in english the Skin Doo) the skin do is a piece of accessory that is a small, single edged knife that is a ceremonial stabbing knife in the 17th and 18th century. It's commonly worn with the full attire of the Scottish highland dress. A Scottish highland dress is a plaid skirt (worn by men) and it can be also worn with a jacket, and headwear, clan badges or anything else that can show family heritage. It is worn inside the top of the kilt hose which is like a sock. Usually the handle of the knife is visible to people. The Sgian-dubh that I have in my family has been passed down since my great - grandfather on my father’s side of the family. It was his mothers’ father’s knife which he got in Glasgow, Scotland. This got passed down to my grandmother which she then gave to my father and I saw it when he wore it to my uncle's wedding. He had a very Scottish wedding where all the groomsmen got dressed in a Scottish highland dress and my father showcased the Sgian - Dubh. I think my father will pass down the Sgian-dubh to my brother in the near future.
