Single Treadle Machine

My sewing journey started quite recently in March of 2023, however, the art of sewing is a practice that has been passed down through generations on my mother's side. Sewing is not only a hobby but an expressive art form that allows for the creation of pieces from scratch or the mending of original items. My love for creating clothes started with my Grandmother who was an avid seamstress. She often used her machine however what I remember most is her hand sewing and knitting that she’d constantly work on throughout her home in Australia. Her dedication to the art is evident in my Mother who constantly accounts for her sewing days; most of which resonates with her university experiences at fashion school. Her short stories are riddled with tips and experiences that I find familiar in my own sewing journey. The most symbolic items that always relate back to my Mother and Grandmother are my thread and fabric shears. Each time I pick up my fabric scissors I’m reminded of how expressive and creative both my Grandparents and Mother are. I also come to terms with the fact that the scissors have traveled from England to Australia to New York in a similar journey to mine and my Mom’s. For that reason, I resonate with sewing so much as I feel it's a representation of the creativity that stems from the migration of my family.
