My project is about my maternal grandmother name Lucy.  She was born and raised in Duran, Ecuador, which is in South America, next to Colombia.  My Abuela, which means grandmother in Spanish, lived with her parents and seven siblings in a very small and primitive house.  My Abuela describes her hometown as poverty-stricken.  Many of the children there did not attend school and instead worked on the farm.  She remembers her childhood in Duran as happy but just too poor to enjoy.  At the age of 20, she met an American Colombian and married in 1969.  My Abuela confesses that although she thought she was in love with him, she realized much later that she was in search of the "American Dream".  Unfortunately, her marriage lasted a couple of years.  Once in Boston, she met her future husband, my Abuelo, and they have been married now for approximately 60 years.  My mother is one out of 5 children.

I have not visited Ecuador yet but it is on my bucket list.  The artifacts there are beautiful and almost always handmade.  Above are some examples of some of the works that we have in my home.
