Rice
My parents came to the United States in 1980 and 1981. They came from Cambodia, during a time of war and famine, and met here in the United States because they attended the same high school. They both have stories to tell, my mother tells dark and sad stories, while my dad tells light-hearted and fun stories. Something they both have in common is how important rice was to them and their family as a food source. They have stories of family members waiting in line to get portions of rice. They have stories of how hungry they were as children. My parents have reiterated to me and my siblings that we will never go hungry. Ever since I can remember, there has always been rice in the rice cooker every day.
