In 1907 My great Great Grandma named Francesca Dicarlo came to the US from Italy on a boat called the Cedric. She lived in Pennsylvania for her beginning years in America before moved to West Virginia to marry Guiseppe Ricci. Guiseppe later changed his name to Joesph Rich to avoid discrimination and Francesca's last name changed to Rich at the same time. When she came to America she brought a pizelle maker and a pizzelle recipe. The recipe got passed down the family line to my great grandmother who was named Lillian. The pizzelle maker shown here isn’t the original but it is the one my great grandmother used and is the one that has been passed down to this generation. My mother would call Lillian “Nunnie” and learned how to make pizzelles with her using this pizzelle maker. When she passed the pizzelle maker became my Grandpa and Grandmas. I also call my grandmother “Nunnie” so along with the pizzelle she also gained the nickname. I have learned to make pizzelles with her using this pizzelle maker. This pizzelle maker connects our family as all the females in the family line have learned from either their parent or grandparent connecting us all with a shared love for the cookie and our family. Every year on Christmas me, my mom, and my grandma go over to my grandmas house and make two or more large containers of pizzelles. We love to spend time together making the cookies and it brings us into the holiday spirit as well as brings us closer together.
