Religion and Objects
My mother migrated to the United States in 1995 and all she had to protect her was a ring and a rosario. She was very young at that time and knew very little English. She talked to us about how scary it was being in a completely different environment and what kept her going was God and her family. Every day she would pray the rosario and would ask to give her strength. She also brought with her my great grandmother's ring that she still has to this day. She always felt safe and calm around her so when she came here, that was the only thing she had of her and it made her feel at peace. The ring has a sun and moon and growing up my mom would tell me she was the sun and I was the moon. She would say no matter what we will always be together and stay connected like them in the ring. Religion has always been an important part of our culture. We have always been told there is always someone looking out for us and taking care of us. My mom kept this in mind when she started her life here in the states. That ring that I now have makes me feel connected to my mom's family and like if someone is looking out for me. That ring to me shows me how powerful and brave the women in my family have been. My mom had a tough time when starting her life here but did not let it get to her and believed God was there every step of the way guiding her. To us, religion and protection can be found in anything including a simple ring or rosario.
