Red Envelope
Red Envelope is an envelope that is red and has meaningful words on. Elders will give red envelopes to kids to wish them good luck. The money in the envelope is called New Year Money (压岁钱) which was meant to be money that keeps 岁 (a type of monster that comes during Chinese New Year to make kids sick) away from kids. When I was little, every chinese new year my family and relatives would gather up at a restaurant and eat, me and my brother would run around with my cousin and get red envelopes from nearly every adult we see. We would often get a whole bag of red envelopes by the time we got home and our parents would tell us not to open it during Chinese new year. I always get excited when Chinese new year is over because then I can open the envelopes and count who gets more with my brother. After we moved here everything changed because we don’t have relatives here, so we don’t get many envelopes any more. I had difficulty getting used to it during the first few years here, but I have managed to adjust to it now. My grandma from China told me that she opened up a bank account for me and my brother and has been putting the money that our relatives give us into the account so we can use the money when we visit China.
