Red Envelope & Money

In Chinese culture, it is customary for family and friends to give you a red envelope during special occasions such as birthdays. The color red is often associated with happiness and protection, which is a symbol of good luck. Naturally, when my parents immigrated to America, they received such red envelopes as a good luck charm for their new beginnings. The character on the red envelope in the picture means good fortune. Throughout time in America, my parents have kept these red envelopes not only as a symbol of good luck, but as a symbol of who they truly are. Coming to a foreign country and not speaking the language made it a struggle to integrate into America. When homesick, they would take out this envelope, which reminds them of the past and their culture. Keeping the money inside was not only for monetary values, but it was also because it had historical significance. As of today, this money is no longer in print, and it is in keepsakes. This money was used when my parents were children, so my parents needed to keep this bill to remind me of times from their childhood. Many people may not consider a red envelope to be so significant, but it was one of the things that helped my parents be reminded of who they are and the culture they brought to America, and passed it down to me. Understanding the significance of the red envelope, it has brought me to value red envelopes more deeply and cherish them for the future.
