I've lived in the Boston area for my whole life, and biking from place to place has been quite common in my family because of that. Since I was a little kid my dad would commute to and from work by bike for almost the whole year. However After covid my dad switched to a virtual line of work, and his bike stopped being used entirely because of this. At the start of freshman year I asked my dad if I could get a new bike. I was thinking of buying a fixed gear at the time because they are simple, cheap and fun. Since he used to ride those types of bikes a lot, he suggested that I convert his old bike into a fixed gear so I could save money and gain some knowledge about bicycles. After multiple months of work and around $250 I finished the bike, and instantly made it my primary mode of transportation. Over the years I have swapped out many parts of my bike with more expensive aluminum and carbon fibre components, however I decided to hang onto the original steel frame that my dad gave me.  My fixed gear has changed a lot in my life, and it has helped me in many aspects of my life. My bike opened up many new social groups for me, it gave me a whole new hobby that I never knew too much about, and overall has made me a nicer and stronger person.
