Quingyang sachet

Quingyang sachet is a very iconic item of China. Quingyang sachets are often time made of silk and embroidered with colored strings to assemble the pattern of Chinese traditional paper cut, which symbolizes happiness, luckiness, safety, peace, and protection form evil and illnesses. Though, the sachets are originally used as air refreshers as they are stuffed with herbs, later on in the history of China, the sachets are found more in the jewelry stores than anywhere else. The jewelry store owners would use Quingyang sachet as jewelry bags whenever a purchase is made. Steven Feng, a good friend of mine, is the owner of the sachet shown in the picture. In the early 2000s, when Steven was 10, his family decided to move to California in search of a better life. Before America, his dad was a teacher and his mom was an accountant. His family was sponsored by his uncle who at the time had been in America for a long time. Steven recalls the moment before his family got on the plane to LA, his parents pulled him aside and tucked a sachet deep inside his backpack. In the sachet, there were a few gold rings which his grandmother gave to his family as financial support. When the family got to LA, due to the fact that his parents could not find any job within the first few weeks, they had to sell the rings. However, they kept the Quingyang sachet to remind themselves of working hard to fill of the sachet with gold again.
