Puerto Rican Accordion
My grandfather left this accordion to me when he passed away back in 2016. This accordion was given to him by his father when he was younger to play for his family in their free time when everyone was home for work. The accordion was passed down through generations as a sound of joy for everyone to hear it, to clear everyone's mind and enjoy each other's company. When my grandfather first came to this country from Puerto Rico in the 1960's, he brought this with him, moving into Freehold, New Jersey. The accordion was played for his (my grandmother) and his kids (my mom, aunts and uncle) until he eventually moved back to Puerto Rico, where he finished out his life. Upon cleaning out his house in Puerto Rico, my step-grandmother handed me the accordion, and I played it for hours for my family. The music came natural, as if he was playing it for me. To this day I play this accordion when I feel down or if a family member feels down.
