Pilon
My dad’s side of the family is very Puerto Rican. They grew up there and it is what they call home. This Pilón is something that has been in my family for quite a while. However, an abundance of my family’s items were ruined during Hurricane Maria. It is important that my family keeps things like these in the family because it connects us back to our long heritage. This item, a Pilón, is used in modern Puerto Rico cooking culture. This Pilón, also known as mortar and pestle, has many uses. For example, it prepares ingredients by crushing them. Such ingredients can include an abundance of things, very often garlic. My family, being the somewhat traditional Puerto Rican family we are, love food. It plays a major role within our holidays, birthdays, and time together, usually everyone in the family will make something and bring it to dinner. At every family dinner, there is consistently rice and beans and flan. Preparing food is very important and most people in my family have Pilón’s of their own.
