Pierogies
Every Christmas, my family gets together with my mothers parents and makes Pierogies for christmas dinner. Pierogies are a polish dumpling that can have many different types of fillings. My family likes making them with cabbage, or mashed potato filling. For me, Pierogies are special because they are from my partial Polish heritage. Pierogies are definitely one of the highlights of Christmas dinner every year, and I always look forward to having them every Christmas. The parents of my mom’s mom are Polish, and this meal is the only Polish meal that my parents and grandparents still make. This meal sparks some curiosity for me, to find out more about when my great grandparents migrated from Poland to the US.
For me, this meal is a great representation of the American experience, because for me being American is being able to hold things that represent who you are, and be in the same place as others who have completely different things that represent who they are. Being American doesn’t mean that I am no longer partially Polish, but I can also be American along with many others that were from completely different parts of the world at some point in their lives.
