Photo of my Sicilian Family
This is a photograph of my Nona (the girl in front) as a little girl taken in 1953. This was the last photograph they took together before my great-grandfather left for Chicago, he left to save money and find a home for the entire family to come to the United States. Then later on work lead him to move further North towards Milwaukee. My great uncle, the boy on the left, soon after was killed by a leftover bomb from WWII in the Sicilian Mountains. This photo came from and was taken in Porticello, a small town in Northern Sicily where my family is from. The photo came with my family on the boat to the United States. This image traveled from Sicily all the way to Milwaukee. My family uses this photo for learning about my family's history. What people need to know is that these photos mean a lot to our families and can tell our stories in more ways than they expect. My grandmother arrived in the United States in 1958 on boat. Her mother, two brothers, and sister all came to live with their father and make a new life. She arrived in Milwaukee on May 10, 1958. Sixty-Eight years later my Grandmother is still living in the Milwaukee area.
