Pepian
My grandmother is the only one in our family who knows how to make pepian. It’s a delicious dish that comes from Guatemala, made with a thick tomato sauce and a whole chicken, served with white rice. She’s made it ever since I was little, and it’s one of the things that reminds me of my home country, and my culture. When she makes it she always says, “¡Eva, te hice tu favorito!” in English, “Eva, I made your favorite!”. When I eat my grandmother's food, I feel an intense happiness wash over me. I remember how much better it tasted in Guatemala with fresh chicken. Everytime I eat it I remember what it was like to be there, and it makes me miss my country. Although I was born in the United States, it gives me profound memories of my time in Guatemala. I hope one day I can learn to make it, and I hope I’ll be able to have it when I go back.
