Pasteles
My family's tradition.
I am from Puerto Rico, from a pueblo called Lajas. Puerto Rico has a lot of foods that represent the island. An important food for my family is pasteles, especially during the holidays. Pasteles are made from platanos, meat, achote, and leaves. They're dark beige once they're fully cooked and they look soft but they also look like they have a weird texture. This is important to my culture because it's been around for a very long time, people cook it for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Los Reyes Magos. It's important to me personally because it shows how much our family cares for each other and it teaches me to be grateful for what I have. I’m grateful my family taught me how to make them and I’m happy that I'm going to be able to show my future family our tradition.
