Passenger Manifest 1921
My father, age 11, arrived in NYC on the SS Berengaria, in October 1921, with his parents and sisters, after a year of travel across Europe, on foot, in a horsedrawn wagon and by train, having fled, literally in the dead of night, from a shtetl (a rural farm village) in the Ukraine to escape an imminent pogrom and the prevailing violence of the Russian civil war. He lived much of the remainder of his life in NYC but in his 70's he came full circle and spent his last 14 years in another rural town, Great Barrington MA. I recently tracked down the passenger manifest of the Berengaria recording the Sternberg family's arrival in the United States.
