“Pass the dutchie pon the left hand side” is a song that echoed throughout my childhood, but to me it represents much more than music. It reminds me of the Dutch pot, a staple in Jamaican homes and a symbol of family, culture, and resilience. With its heavy steel body darkened by years of use, the Dutch pot holds more than food. It holds generations of stories, traditions, and memories.


The Dutch pot or "Dutchie" embodies the heart of Jamaican culture. It brings to mind the aroma of rice and peas simmering on the stove, the warmth of Sunday dinners, and family gathered around the table sharing meals and laughter. Jamaican culture is rooted in community, and “pass the dutchie” symbolizes sharing, connection, and belonging. Coming from an immigrant family, I grew up hearing stories of sacrifice. Relatives worked long hours, struggled to make ends meet, and left behind the lives they knew in search of a better future. The Dutch pot represents those sacrifices. Like the pot itself, forged from strong steel and built to withstand intense heat, immigrants endure hardship with determination and strength. To me, the Dutch pot is a reminder that despite every challenge, family and community remain strong enough to carry us forward.
