Pan dulce is a staple in a Mexican household. My aunt’s mother would always make homemade pan dulce for their family. There would always be pan dulce at every party or family gathering at the table. My aunt immigrated with her children from Mexico to the United States. Pan dulce became a special item for her because it was the first time she was not going to be able to see her mother frequently as she was always able to. This bread recipe gave her happiness as it reminded her of her mother. My aunt decided to immigrate to the United States because she wanted to give her children a better future. She wanted to earn a living wage, get a better education for her children, and give her children opportunities. Not being able to see her mother and family left behind made this challenging. It was difficult because my aunt felt alone. But every time she baked bread, it reminded her of home and to keep going. It reminded my aunt of her goals of how she wanted to give her children a better life and to one day bring her mother to the States as well.
