Painting of Immigrant Ship
This painting is of the immigrant ship my great-grandfather Anthonio came to the US on from Italy during Mussolini’s fascist dictatorship in 1929. He was about 9 years old. In 1932, when he was twelve years old, he painted this picture of the ship from just his memory. He labeled the ship Conte Di Savuda, but its real name was the Conte Biancamano. He was so young when he was on it he probably didn’t remember the right name for the boat. This object is important to me because it’s a real painting of the ship my great-grandfather was on from his point of view which is a cardinal point in my family history. My artifact is also associated with Ellis Island, the immigration port the ship came through.
