An important artifact in my family specifically from my mother is an old Chinese calculator. Life in China during the 20th century was poverty and non-industrialized cities with small towns and farmlands. My grandparents were poor and tried their best to make a good living for their children. My mother was very intelligent and pursued in accounting during her studies at high school. She was lucky enough to get financial assistance from the government to be able to attend accounting school hours away where her family lives. There she learned the principles of economics and received the calculator. The calculator was old fashioned and was from wood and tiny beads. The calculator is weird and looks nothing like the present day calculators that people have. The special connection that I have with this calculator is I am planning to pursue something in the economic and finance field and that artifact will give confidence to continue pursuing economics. This object connects to my identity because my mother’s traits are being passed down to me and I want to pursue something that she majored in.
