Newspaper article
This article announces the death of my great-grandpa Henri Olivier. He was a farmer in the Perche a northern region in France. During World War II, he served in the French resistance and would first get involved in politics at the local level in 1947 becoming a member of the municipal council of his commune. He later became assistant mayor of his commune in 1959 and was mayor from 1971 to 1995. He held several important positions during his career, serving as general counsel of Rémalard from 1970 until 1994. He was also a member of the commission of social, school, and cultural affairs for 9 years. He even served as senator for his commune from 1974 until 1992 and was regional council in 1975. Although I never met my great-grandfather, I always felt a connection with him from the memories that my family passed on. I was born and raised in the U.S. and America is the only place I have called home. These memories are the only things that still tie me to France and my heritage. By remembering who my great-grandfather was I am remembering who I am, and I remember my unique cultural heritage that is an essential part of my identity.
