The significant object that I have chosen is a gold Irish Celtic Cross my grandmother gave to me for my Confirmation. It isn't an heirloom or hand made by anyone in my family, but it does remind me of my grandmother whom I loved very much. She and I would spend many hours reading while I was growing up. She knew that reading wasn't one of my favorite things to do but it was very important to her. She always told me that reading is the most important gift you could have and not waste it.
My grandfather, her husband was born here in America but his parents came over from Ireland at a very young age. They were both teenagers sent to America to find a better life. They actually didn't meet each other until they were in America. I don't know much about my great-grandparents because my grandfather died when I was young. I have been told that he was proud of his Irish heritage and the achievements of his parents in a strange land. The Irish Celtic Cross is a reminder of where my family came from and the pride they had for their ancestors.
