My Mothers Pallete
My mother’s makeup palette. When I was young, I'd sit for hours watching her use it to get ready for family gatherings or for dinners. The vibrant colors and glitter highlights reminded her of the lively culture she left behind when she moved to New York. When my mother migrated from the Dominican Republic to New York when she was eight years old, she could barely speak the language and had to face many challenges. On top of that the few things she brought with her was her makeup palette. For my mom, makeup was a way to feel more grounded and more like herself in a place where she feels like a complete stranger. Through years of having to battle obstacles, including a brief time of homelessness, that palette became a symbol of strength.
My mom always recreated these gorgeous looks, even as a young boy, using golds and reds that were her roots. In the Dominican Republic, makeup looks are famous for being elegant and appealing and also enhancing natural beauty that reflect on the warmth and vibrancy on the island. Through cosmetics, she embraced her identity, showing me that beauty can be both personal and cultural. Every time I apply a bit of color, I’m reminded of her strength and the way she balanced tradition with her own sense of beauty. This palette tells a story of my mothers immigration journey and finding identity.
