My Great Grandma's Photograph
My name is Ethan Cortes and my third grade class and I are learning about family culture and immigration. A good way to learn about these two things are by beginning with my own family’s culture. I spoke with my grandma who had many stories and information about my family’s history here in the United States. My grandma showed me a picture of her mom which she kept for a long time. The picture is so old it’s in black and white. Grandma said it was taken sometime in 1946 and likes to keep it in sight so she can remind herself, and us, of my great grandmother. This picture is special because some people in my family never got to see or even meet her. Grandma likes to keep the picture in the living room for all family and friends to see. In this picture, my great grandmother is 27 years old. She had just returned to New York City after living in Kentucky and moved into an apartment on West 21st Street in Manhattan. The picture was taken on the rooftop of her building where she lived. My great grandmother was a beautiful woman and a very good mom. I really liked learning about her life and the stories my grandma shared with me. I can’t wait to share them with my own family one day.
